After reading the playwright Anna in the Tropics, I decided to take on the role of being a costume designer. Through taking on the position, there were serval obstacles I had to overcome such as the clothing style, character choices, as well as placing the costumes together. One challenge that I faced as a costume designer was of course choosing a style that would show both the time and the characters specific culture. In the play, time was set in the year of 1929. Not only was it important to focus on the outfit but I also wanted the makeup to be historically accurate. In the G reat Depression, woman wore very little makeup, ivory skin was poplar, as was blush. To compliment the blush a dark rouge lip color was worn dramatizing the cupids bow. As for the eyes, I applied light colors as well as eyeliner that would begin at the tear duct and end as a triangle shape at the end of their eye. As for mascara, I focused solely on the upper eyelashes and for her hairstyle, I wanted her to have short hair with tight finger curls. For Ofelia’s next costume, when she and her husband were in the living room, I wanted the audience to see a traditional family in the 1930s in how they used to dress. For Ofelia, I gave her darker colors and made sure the dress was a floral print. Also I placed an apron on her and had her hair the same way. During this era, woman were expected to look their best for their husbands at all times. As for Marela, I wanted to make her costume when she poses for the companies new slogan. As noted in the playwright she wears a long ja cket with fur trimming and a fur hat. Therefore I chose to make a white jacket with a fur collar trimming and made the coat long as most woman jackets were in the 1930s. In the second to last scene, at the party, the
